Headphones are a pair of small loudspeaker drivers worn on or around the head over a user's ears. They are electroacoustic transducers, which convert an electrical signal to a corresponding sound.
Headphones let a single user listen to an audio source privately, unlike a loudspeaker, which emits sound into the open air for anyone nearby to hear. Headphones are also known as earphones, earbuds (when they fit directly in the ear), or, colloquially, cans.
They are used by listeners to enjoy music, for audio engineering tasks, and by gamers in gaming, to both listen to audio and isolate surrounding noises. In communication environments (like call centers and air traffic control), headphones may be used with a built-in microphone to allow for speaking.
Headphones come in various styles, including over-ear, on-ear, and in-ear, each with its advantages in comfort, sound quality, and portability.
Headphones are not allowed in passport photos. When taking a passport photo, the subject's face must be clearly visible without any obstructions.
This includes removing any headgear, head coverings, and headphones or earphones, except for those worn for religious or medical reasons.
Even in those cases, the face must be fully visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the crown and from ear to ear.
The rules ensure that the photo accurately represents the individual's appearance for identification purposes, and any accessories that might hide the face are generally prohibited.
