In humans, the lower jaw consists of a curved horizontal section and two perpendicular sections. The teeth are located in the jaw.

The jaw can have different shapes. There are generally three types of jawlines:
- Rounded jawline: a jawline where no angles are visible between the horizontal section and the perpendicular section.
- Pointed jawline: a narrow jawline with the horizontal section forming a point.
- Angular jawline: a wide jawline with distinct angles between the horizontal section and the perpendicular section.
